We left our hotel this morning at 730 and traveled by train all day untill about 230. It was a long travel day. We finally got to Heidelberg and had to ride the bus like sardines to old town. Went to find our hotel and what do you know, it is at the base of the castle!!!!
This photo is takin out of the window of our hostel!
Out the other window.
Our building is the one to the right of the yellow building. Not to shabby.
After we got settled into the hostel we headed out for a very late lunch we quickly realized that every street here is amazing. It is like being on a movie set.
Lunch time in the plaza.
BIG NEWS! Ok folks listen up, I have news. I have really been thinking about this a lot the last 10 days and have realized that be being vegan is really messing up my travels because I can't eat much of anything and it makes me look like an ass hole when I order. So I have decided that when I am in another country I will relax my vegan life A LITTLE. Still no meat and I will not be drinking milk or eating ice cream, but I will be ok with cheese and will not worry about milk and eggs as ingredients in food I eat. As soon as I am back home I will return to my super vegan life but I am more worried about living life here and not stressing about eating!
Ok back to my travels. We ate lunch in the square, Italian again. We seem to eat a lot of Italian here. After that we walked to the old bridge and shoot a few photos.
Then made the huge trek up hill to the castle. Broke a bit of a sweet today! The castle is very beautiful and has a perfect view of the city.
We are now taking a break from the "heat" and resting our feet. I am doing some much need laundry. Germany is playing Denmark tonight so we will head out to cheer them on and of course have a few beers!
Tonight was amazing! We sat outside a bar and watched the game (germany won!!!!). We sat next to a really nice guy who is half German half English. We spend the first part of the night discussing the differences between America and Germany. It was a really educational conversation. Afterwards Celeste and I and the German headed off to have a few drinks and see the town. What a great and random connection with a wonderful person!
Where we watched the game!
Our new friend.
What a wonderful day!!
Good night and thanks for reading!

I think it's okay to relax veganism when you're immersed in a culture that largely doesn't understand it. Correct me if I'm wrong but, you're there as a de facto ambassador - to experience things as they do but with an American perspective, not to alter their dietary practices. Along with that goes watching television they watch, reading the news they read, appreciating their art with them, and eating their food at their tables. It's respectful to do these things. However, you do get the unique experience of writing about your adventures as a vegan in a foreign land, and that may be the most interesting story.
ReplyDeleteYou exactly right. It is not my place to force my cultur on these people it is my job while here to soak up their culture. A little cheese is not going to hurt me. We had a really great time last night with a German guy. After we watched Germany win another football game we ended up talking to this gu and comparing information about our cultures and then we all went out and drank together! That is what traveling is all about.
